Continued poor harvests and steam-powered industrialization displace and impoverish thousands. Protests grow and gather followers.
Against this rising tide of social unrest, Steffan Dekkard, newly appointed to the Council of Sixty-Six, is the first Councilor who is an Isolate, a man invulnerable to the emotional manipulations and emotional surveillance of empaths.
This makes him dangerous.
As unknown entities seek to assassinate him, Dekkard struggles to master political intrigue and infighting, while introducing radical reforms that threaten entrenched political and corporate interests.

I am not familiar with this author, so the two books in this series are the only samples by which I can judge his work. The ENDLESS descriptions of meals and attire, along with the tedious details of council “administrivia,” were so in both books were a bit of an ordeal at times. I kept wondering WHEN there would be some clue as to the real nature of this clearly alternative world. What sort of atmosphere results in a GREEN SKY? Are they methane breathers? The natives are smart enough to develop an elaborate steam-punk technology, but CAN’T figure out that spinning a magnet in a COIL of wire will drive electric current? Then there is that BOOK that’s supposed to be SO revelatory, CITY OF TRUTH (or whatever), which seems to be little more than rambling homilies about art. The point? Please? I tend to stick with a work long beyond endurance, out of respect for the effort, but this was nearly as bad as one of those 19th century novels, “Pride and Prejudice” comes to mind, or Dostoyevsky (Russian literature IMPROVES with translation). I will say the reader at least made this journey tolerable. Okay. I’m done.

Cag, he can do some fast paced and slow paced books. These are the slowest paced of the books he’s written.

The Imager and Recluse books are among my favorite books. The Corean books are also very good. The Forever Hero kinda drug bug the ending will kick you right in the feels.
One theme he harps on real hard is feminism. It never dawned on me until the second time thru the Recluse Saga and I couldn’t not see it.
Still want every one he writes tho.
