Donald Cotton - Doctor Who - The Myth Makers (2008 BBC Audiobooks Ltd UK)
Long, long ago on the great plains of Asia Minor, two mighty armies faced each other in mortal combat. The armies were the Greeks and the Trojans, and the prize they were fighting for was Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world. To the Greeks it seemed that the city of Troy was impregnable and only a miracle could bring them success.
And then help comes to them in a most mysterious way, as a strange blue box materialises close to their camp, bringing with it the Doctor, Steven and Vicki, who soon find themselves caught up in the irreversible tide of history and legend…
Stephen Thorne, who appeared in several episodes of the classic BBC TV Doctor Who series, reads Donald Cotton’s complete and unabridged novelisation, first published by Target Books in 1985.

Looks interesting. Thank you

hi — this is a question for Dr. Who fans who also listen to audiobooks. I’m dying to get into Dr. Who. I ask where to start, everyone offers different opinions, but most say do TV first, whereas I’d prefer to stick to audio. Any ideas? I tried randomly listening to selections here, but it didn’t work out so well. Thank you.

Try Eighth Doctor audios

I agree. Start with Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor. Either start with Storm Warning and work from there or begin with the highly entertaining Lucie Millar series, starting with Blood of the Daleks.

Amy, the best way is to start at the begining I suppose :) Start with the first doctor William Hartnell, then try a few of Patrick Troughton (Second doctor), then a couple of Jon Pertwee (Third doctor), and so on until you find the doctor you really like. For me I was brought up watching Jon Pertwee’s doctor, but really like the sixth doctor’s (Colin Baker) stories when it comes to audio. There’s no really set place to start as he is a time traveller :) Just keep enjoying the doctor like I have done for over 40 years :)

Thanks mate, you continue to be a veritable font of Dr Who goodness.!!
They just keep coming & coming.
I’m no sooner getting into one & the next is on the way.!
I’ve never been so spoiled for choice.!
It’s especially appreciated because without you there’s just no way I’d be able to buy these(I’m disabled & can’t work & it’s literally a choice between a book or a bit less shopping),
also I can’t get to the library (I live in the Scottish Highlands & the nearest library is 45 miles away).
I used to feel guilty about “stealing” these titles, so I went to the Big Finish site thinking I’d buy a title or two.
I couldn’t believe the bloody prices, I don’t feel quite as bad now.
It’s not like BF are losing money because I’d never be able to buy them anyway.!!
I see it as an alternative to the library.
Make no mistake, you really are providing a service, that for me at least makes my life that bit more tolerable.
Once again DuckPlumber…thank you.!!

Hi Amy, I discovered Doctor Who audio books 2 years ago and haven’t looked back since. I listen to them as I drive to and from work each day. I grew up with Doctor Who on TV so I had the advantage of knowing the different Doctors and his companions and the various ‘monsters’ or “foes’ that he has dealt with over the years. I really think you need to have some of that background knowledge to truly appreciate and enjoy the audio collections as they pick up on some of the TV stories and take them further and fill some gaps. As far as audio goes, I started with the Big Finish (BF) monthly releases - starting with number 1. I am now up to 182. Note that these are not in any particular ‘Doctor order’ and jump around a bit in time and space. I have listened to some of the other audio productions as well - enjoying Tom Baker and a number of the Fourth Doctor stories the most. If you have no knowledge (or very little knowledge) of Doctor Who then I suggest getting hold of the ‘Doctor Who 50th Anniversary’ TV specials as they take you each of the doctors and give you a bit of an idea of what each Doctor was like and some background to his companions of the time. Here is a link to the specials:

Hope this helps.
