The novel takes place in a small Wyoming community called Potter’s Field. Though normally a quiet town, Sheriff Nathan Slaughter suddenly finds himself confronted by inexplicable outbreaks of mindless violence, several bodies and the discovery of a new kind of viral infection that appears to be closely related to rabies, though it works much quicker.
Along with the town coroner and an alcoholic reporter that he befriended years ago in Detroit, Slaughter attempts to save the townspeople from the cruel disease, which turns its victims into raving, uncontrollable murderers.

Terrible quality. Extremely distorted. Don’t bother with this garbage.

^I’ve checked it on three different devices, with multiple applications.
It plays at a pretty high volume, I agree, but “distorted” and “terrible quality” is a little exaggerated.
Maybe you should check your own player’s settings ?

This is what is called normalization. I don’t recommend using setting when ripping audiobooks.

Why does every single sci fi audiobook have to have a female lead character now? I get they exist but why every single one? I am pretty sure scifi is like 80/20 men, so throw us a bone

This book was published in 1979, Sprokets. I know it’s complicated but women have existed just as long as we have.
