Henry Dorsett Case is a low-level hustler in the dystopian underworld of Chiba City, Japan. Once a talented computer hacker and “console cowboy”, Case was caught stealing from his employer. As punishment, Case’s central nervous system was damaged, leaving him unable to access the virtual reality dataspace called the “matrix”. Case is approached by Molly Millions, an augmented “razorgirl” and mercenary on behalf of a shadowy US ex-military officer named Armitage, who offers to cure Case for his services as a hacker. Case agrees, and his nervous system is repaired, though sacs of poison are placed in his blood vessels. If Case completes the job, Armitage will have the sacs removed; if not, they will burst and cripple him again.

@Khameleon yeah, I wish it would give some information about the story rather than stroke the authors ego. I guess they just expect people to know about it because of its status.

Such a clastic that birthed a whole genre of cyberpunk from Shadowrun to cyberpunk2077 to the matrix or blade runner. William Gibson was way ahead of his time. back in the 90s all gothed out and hanging in Harvard square in Boston hanging with the mit students and reading Gibsons masterpiece. Going to 2600 meetings first Tuesday of every month at the prude. having access to all the Leet bbs’s like the L0pht or Cult of the Dead cow. getting to read all the T files and Phrack zine. It really felt like we were headed towards a cyberpunk future. I was going to be a shadowruner. lol I miss the days of mail packets with blue wave mail reader or news groups on dial up bbs’s and bbs door games like trade wars or L.O.R.D.

An excellent book, and a great opportunity to listen to it again. Right up there with Snow Crash.
