‘A highly readable, fascinating book that jerks the debate on religion versus atheism right out of its crusted rut into the light of serious intellectual scrutiny’ Observer
A meditation on the importance of atheism in the modern world - and its inadequacies and contradictions - by one of Britain’s leading philosophers
‘When you explore older atheisms, you will find some of your firmest convictions - secular or religious - are highly questionable. If this prospect disturbs you, what you are looking for may be freedom from thought.’
For a generation now, public debate has been corroded by a narrow derision of religion in the name of an often very vaguely understood ’science’. John Gray’s stimulating and extremely enjoyable new book describes the rich, complex world of the atheist tradition, a tradition which he sees as in many ways as rich as that of religion itself, as well as being deeply intertwined with what is so often crudely viewed as its ‘opposite’.
The result is a book that sheds an extraordinary and varied light on what it is to be human and on the thinkers who have, at different times and places, battled to understand this issue.

Thanks so much zbatman - I was looking for this on Audible after I heard a great interview with Gray. Of course, then I forgot about it.
Your efforts are really appreciated!

cue triggered christians in 5… 4…

Uhh, speaking as an entirely untriggered Christian, it’s different when the writer is genuinely incisive and erudite, like John Gray; then everyone can learn something from their reflections.
Now, if it were cretins like Dawkins or Hitchens (”Ditchens”) - then rational objections should be raised.
Incidentally, check out Gray’s earlier books like Straw Dogs, it’s a long time, but I remember thinking that they were great.

“cretins” like “Ditchens”?
That’s a sentence only a triggered person would type.

Still entirely untriggered, cowlark. The language may be colourful, but it’s there to illustrate the contrast. This writer is just better, more informed, coherent & lucid. He actually knows the area & has something useful to contribute.

This is not rocket science.
The growing body of scientific evidence shows clearly that the universe had a beginning and was designed.
Design can only come from a mind.
To disregard the science is up to each individual, to deny the science is merely irrantional.

Cowlark, I saw another thread where Ceaser made about 7 like dick jokes in reference to Dawkins.
He sounded pretty triggered when he called him “ole stick Dick Dawkins”.
It was pretty cringey, and I actually agree that Dawkins is not philosophically rigorous.

I just went back and checked. He called him “sticky Dick Dawkins”, not “stick Dick”. My bad.
I can be quite silly at times, but I rarely am unintentionally ironic.
If your bone to pick with Dawkins is that he is disrespectful and not philosophically rigorous, an ironic reaction is giving an unphilosophical dismissal of him followed by a stream of juvenile name calling.

Er, now you’re just being silly. “7 like dick jokes”? A few pungent puns, p’haps. However, with Dawkins, it’s really a victimless crime. There is no there, there, so to speak. All enthusiasts & proponents of eugenics should be treated with appropriate revulsion by civilised society.

To label him a proponent of eugenics belies a reliance on either hearsay or knee-jerk reaction to buzzwords. His statement on the matter that made everyone so upset was essentially that humans, like dogs or maize or any other organism, can definitely be, through either selective breeding or more direct genetic manipulation, artificially optimised for some set of traits deemed “desirable” to those optimising. It was a response, and a natural one for an evolutionary biologist to make, to people claiming that, by some miracle of political mandate or religious fervour, the phenomena of natural and artificial selection do not apply to “us”.
He also immediately followed the statement with a “but of course the potential for rights violations and general suffering make it an extremely dangerous idea” caveat, which everyone ignored.
It is true that Hitchens was prone to saying dumb and contradictory things, preferring “zingers” and mud-slinging to coherent arguments, and I think his influence on those around him to some extent held them back. Dawkins, however, has always tried to be very careful and measured in his thinking, and the worst he can really be accused of is a lack of tact.
If you’ve not already, please do at least give The Extended Phenotype a read.

@howlafist - “Abort ‘it’ - and try again” - Dawkin’s responsible tweet to the impressionable wide world, and to a worried, fragile mother, in 2014. Eugenics, as I live and breathe (not that ‘imperfect’ children would be living and breathing, if Dawkins and his ilk have their way). If tw^tter had been a factor during the 1930s, I wonder who would have “liked” that particular comment?
Half-hearted, perfunctory disclaimers are nauseatingly irrelevant and inadmissible in the case of eugenics.
As to his being “careful and measured” - no, just no. And his “lack of tact”? I sincerely couldn’t give a flying spaghetti monster.
Clearly, Hitchens wasn’t the only one “prone to saying dumb and contradictory things.”
Horsemen? Definitely horse-something…
