What would happen if the world were ending?
A catastrophic event renders the Earth a ticking time bomb.
In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space.
But the complexities and unpredictability of human nature coupled with unforeseen challenges and dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain…
5,000 years later, their progeny—seven distinct races now three billion strong—embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown…to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth.
A writer of dazzling genius and imaginative vision, Neal Stephenson combines science, philosophy, technology, psychology, and literature in a magnificent work of speculative fiction that offers a portrait of a future that is both extraordinary and eerily recognizable.
As he did in “Anathem”, “Cryptonomicon”, the “Baroque Cycle”, and “Reamde”, Stephenson explores some of our biggest ideas and perplexing challenges in a breathtaking saga that is daring, engrossing, and altogether brilliant.

First two thirds of this book are as good as anything that Stephenson of old has done.

I’ve never read any of his other stuff, but I liked the first 2/3s of it too! It does sort of read like the author got lost in his research though, because he sometimes takes pages to explain things he could easily have left out or explained in 1 sentence… I still haven’t gotten past the last couple 100 pgs.I wanted to know what happened to those people but not enough to read the rest, apparently.

One of my favorite sci fi books. Similar to Kim Stanley Robinson. Speaking of which. Red Moon KSRs new book is out.

a waste of time imo terrible

Bit odd. I feel like it was intended to be a series because the first 2/3 are one type of story and the final 3rd is like a weird epilogue that feels like the ending of a different book in the series. Not sure what happened with the writer.
