It’s thirty years from now. We’re making progress, mitigating climate change, slowly but surely. But what about all the angry old people who can’t let go?
For young Americans a generation from now, climate change isn’t controversial. It’s just an overwhelming fact of life. And so are the great efforts to contain and mitigate it. Entire cities are being moved inland from the rising seas. Vast clean-energy projects are springing up everywhere. Disaster relief, the mitigation of floods and superstorms, has become a skill for which tens of millions of people are trained every year. The effort is global. It employs everyone who wants to work. Even when national politics oscillates back to right-wing leaders, the momentum is too great; these vast programs cannot be stopped in their tracks.

Obama said at his inauguration that it would mark the start of the waters receding.
Manhattan was supposed to be under water 20 years ago. The water didn’t rise. But watch out, it will be under water in 20 years!

Give us a single credible source who said that NYC would “be under water 20 years ago.” I’ll wait…

Obama said a lot of things that never happened but he did get very wealthy and bought a huge mansion right on the water front. I guess he plans to sell it just before 2035 when the waters flow inland and drown the rest of us.

April 1975 saw Newsweek predict the new ice age hitting us in the 80s, predicting shorter growing seasons, worldwide famine, universal armageddon.
It was eventually changed to global warming, which was then changed to ‘climate change’ so you could just say it was happening (no matter what happened).
blah blah.
We are nowhere near as hot as the earth has been historically, between ice ages. The siberian ice-bound wastelands used to be grass-lands (as evidence shows when you dig down and find grasses frozen in the permafrost, where they find frozen carcasses of wooly mammoths from time to time). In short, it is cyclical.

Can’t believe you q-anon lizard conspiracy nut jobs have to rant your psuedoscience bollocks even when it’s a science fiction novel in question. Grow up or shut up

i tried to listen to it…
it’s so poorly written and the ideals are so insane, even if you follow the thought process of global warming, it will leave you scratching your head saying
“What the F*ck” did i just hear?
science fiction is very much a stretch even for this book.
i wouldn’t bother wasting your bandwidth on this…
you are welcome, I did the hard wrl for you and think i am completely scarred because of it lol

HIGH LEVEL OF TWATTERY ON THIS COMMENT THREAD

I’m not a huge fan of Doctorow’s hype? all his books remind me of ‘The catcher in the rye”, and being so intrusive with educational paradigma that, that clearly makes the genre an the plot meaningless and bleak.
But I’ll still give it a try hoping this one is a scifi and not a teenage everyday struggles.

The star/point system is here to rate the quality and organization of the torrent, not the content.
Keep all you back patting in your echo chambers, don’t do it here. Please and Thank You.

This guy used to write good stuff. All aging anarchofail NPC regurgitation, now.

Have yet to read a bad Doctorow. Usually have to slow down the speed a tad to grasp the concepts. Read by the Author - not an easy task! But soon I will judge for myself. Using MY brain.

Love Doctorow. Like many I grew up with him going back to the beginning of Boing Boing!, Eastern Standard Tribe and Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom (way before Little Brother, you lightweights) . I’ll give it a go, but am already pretty red pilled on climate. I’ve witnessed the decline of other steady figurehead role models like Doug Rushkoff, Doctorow wouldn’t be surprising. Even smart people only have so many cycles to spare. It would be best if he stuck to what he knows best: gov’t backdoor’d computer systems and right to repair stuff. I never thought he hit that topic hard enough, despite him giving it a good try….
