Yeah, it was grim, but this was way back in the dirty 30s, remember. All the way back then, the British had their nasty class system, hereditary monarchy, anachronistic aristocracy, the house of lords, the corrupt honours system, rancid racism, princes able to get away with anything - including rape, etc. etc.
