After getting this copy I noticed that this was also available on Audible.
That version is apparently “now fully corrected by its author”, whatever that means.
This reading is taken from the Viking Press edition 1984 and recorded in 1985.
Oh well, someone else can rip that one.
I’m excited that I can now listen to this book.
Enjoy

From the book jacket:
Let it, therefore, rest at this: the events recorded here began as one day the would end-
In mystery.
From the terrifying vision fo its opening scene to the breathtaking horror of its climax, The Ceremonies turn our familiar world into a place of satanic intrigue and ominous design. In the grip of an extraordinary writer, it plumbs our darkest forebodings, the deadly underpinning of ancient myth and folklore, to reveal an undying evil in our midst.
For graduate student Jeremy Freirs, citified, cynical, yet prone to daydreams, summer is the time to shed a few pounds and finally get some reading done. He’s picked just the right place: the small, secluded village of Gilead, New Jersey, only ninety minutes from Manhattan but, with its antique customs and clannish traditions, seemingly a century away. For farmers Sarr and Deborah Poroth, young members of Gilead’s fundamentalist community, the summer threatens a conflict between their passionate natures and the stern dictates of their faith. For Sarr’s widowed mother, gifted with second sight, it promises the frightful awakening she’s dreaded all her life. And for aspiring dancer Carol Conklin, a red-haired virginal country girl struggling to survive in the city, the hot weather brings not only the first blush of romance but a lucky job with a kindly looking old man known as Mr. Rosebottom.
But “Rosie”, as he calles himself, bears a more sinister name - the Old One - and a far more terrifying face. Only he knows the dark design that rules these people’s lives: for in the heat of the summer an infinite corruption is stirring, an evil rooted not far from the Poroth farm, yet reaching sinuously and beyond. The signs are all about them, but the Old one alone knows that the rest dance unwittingly toward a horror and doom. The time is right for the Ceremonies, the monstrous rites that will unleash on a despised creation an age-old promise of apocalypse. And to ee the scheme unfold, like some deadly flower, is to watch a nightmare come to life.
T. E. D. Klein, a native New Yorker, has written some of the eighties’ most accomplished tales of fantasy and horror, including the much-acclaimed novella “Children of the Kingdom” which appeared in the Viking anthology Dark Forces. For the past four years he has been the editor of Twilght Zone magazine. This is his first novel.

Thank You!

I look forward to this. I just hope it’s not tainted with the Lovecraftian racism & xenophobia found in some of his shorts, like “Black Man with a Horn.” (I know people will object to this, but it’s written from the perspective that people of color are Other, and that race exists as something like species, not as a social construction. And blackness is of course associated with evil, etc.)

You can blame that racism on his upbringing. It’s not an excuse but if that is what you’re taught from an early age that’s how you’ll think until you learn on your own.

black man with a horn, the racism in that story was an aspect of the character rather than the author. We are meant to feel uncomfortable about it. This is very different than in HPL works. but his opinions where the opinions of the time and, as crazy as this may sound, were thought of a scientific. Awful i know. we should all feel glad to live in the age we do where, although there is still a way to go, at least times have changed.

Been waiting for this one, thanks!

The “black man” has been a term used to
describe the devil for eons. Racism is now meaningless except as a word to try and
control others. What about calls for white
genocide whites must pay more no whites need
apply that’s racism. It is now a word with zero meaning. No one cares being called a
racist these days it is not even a talking point now. You have no idea what your talking
about and to use this name without researching
it and then saying we have a ways to go yet
ignoring this “racist country” put a black man
in office is beyond belief. 32 mass shootings under 44 more police murdered under 44.Now police
will not even show up when called who can blame
them. It is now just boring being called a
racist.

Re: tinylion — HPL was a disgusting racist even for his time. And no, it wasn’t considered scientific then. HPL came around generations after the abolitionists. Racism is not brainwashing; and it is not inevitable that every white person in certain times or places is bound to be racist. Radicals on the left, for example, have always included many whites who strenuously and actively criticized racism.
And I’m not going to play the game of deciphering an author’s intent. But even if one’s intent is antiracist, one can still end up creating a work which perpetuates racism more than it undermines it.
And, you, Sweeny, at first I thought you’re just crazy. But your first and last lines are very revealing. And then of course I realized that the real hard-core racists aren’t bothered by being called racist, because they think they see the world as it is, and if that means being called racist, then oh well, so be it.
(Some might say I’m misinterpreting you, Sweeny, as you refer to Obama as evidence the country isn’t racist. But such contradictions are common among racists: they deny it exists, but then go on to justify it or excuse it …by, for example, pointing to cop shootings in non-white neighborhoods.)
